I never “just show up” for the ceremony. I arrive 30 minutes early to coordinate with the celebrant. I need to know the exact placement of microphones and where you will be standing. For your vows, my Sony Alpha 7 cameras are set to Silent Shooting. In a quiet church or a hushed garden, the sound of a shutter can break the spell. By being silent, I disappear.
Pre-Vow Positioning and Ceremony Lighting Assessment
As you walk down the aisle and approach the altar, my immediate priority is securing the optimal shooting angle based on the venue’s available light. I silently coordinate with your officiant and videographer to ensure clear sightlines to both of your faces. By establishing these positions early, I guarantee that no one steps into the frame and blocks the camera just as you begin to read your vows.
Unobtrusive Documentary Photography During the Vows
The moment you begin speaking, my approach shifts to strict documentary coverage. To ensure I do not distract you or your guests, I shoot from a distance using professional telephoto lenses and silent camera shutters. This allows me to capture highly intimate, cinematic close-ups of your falling tears, quiet smiles, and tightly held hands without ever intruding on your personal space.
Anticipating the Ring Exchange and First Kiss
As the vows conclude, a photographer must anticipate the most rapid movements of the ceremony. I preemptively adjust my camera settings and subtly shift my angle to clearly capture the wedding rings sliding onto your fingers. From there, I am perfectly locked in and focused to capture the climactic first kiss and the joyful, high-energy recessional walk back down the aisle.

Your wedding ceremony is an intimate, real-life event, not a photoshoot. As a professional photographer, my job during the vows is strictly documentary. I am there to capture the authentic connection, the tears, and the quiet smiles exchanged between the two of you. Looking at the camera breaks the fourth wall and pulls you out of the moment. Pretend the cameras are completely invisible. Lock eyes with your partner, hold their hands, and focus entirely on the promises you are making to each other.
Yes. Professional wedding photographers use specialised low-light equipment to capture sharp, beautiful images in dark venues without ever using a flash.
Many historic churches and religious venues strictly prohibit flash photography during the ceremony to maintain the solemnity of the space. To adapt to this, I shoot using full-frame camera sensors and “fast” prime lenses—glass designed to let in maximum natural light. This allows me to capture the warm, ambient glow of the church candles and stained glass exactly as you see it in person, all while remaining completely unobtrusive and respectful of the ceremony rules.
